Round Brilliant
The round brilliant cut diamond is the most popular and most commonly researched diamond shape available today. Various mathematical predictive models and performance tools exist which help optimize the fire, brilliance and scintillation return. The real advantage of a round diamond is that it provides you more flexibility in terms of the selecting a diamonds cut, color, and clarity – the resulting combination determining the performance of the diamond.
Tips: To get the best performing round diamond, select the highest cut grade you can (ideal or very good). Selecting a round brilliant with a high polish and symmetry grading will help maximize light return. More light return produces a diamond which appears larger.
Princess (square modified brilliant)
For those looking for something other than a traditional round diamond, the princess cut provides a unique and elegant shape for engagement rings while still providing the high degree of brilliance found in a round brilliant. A relatively new cut (created in the 1960s), the face of the princess cut is square or rectangular with pointed corners – the profile being similar to that of an inverted pyramid. When selecting a princess cut diamond, the ratio between the length and the width of the cut will determine the appeal the one’s eyes. If you prefer a diamond shape that is closer to a perfect square, look for a length-to-width ratio of between 1.0 and 1.05. If you prefer a diamond shape that is more rectangular, consider a length-to-width ratio of greater then 1.10
Tips: A square princess cut diamond is generally cheaper than a round brilliant cut diamond of the same carat weight due to the fact that more of the rough diamond is retained during cutting (when compared to a round cut)
Cushion cut diamonds are commonly known as “pillow cut” diamonds and are distinguished by their rounded corners and increased brilliance stemming from the larger facets adorning it. The cushion cut is an antique cut that is regaining popularity (most notabily in Birk’s Amorique collection). Though not as fiery or scintillating as some modern cuts, the cushion cut has a romantic allure making it a unique choice.
Tips: Because of the larger facets, cushion cut diamonds showcase a diamonds clarity, opt for the highest clarity and color grade within your budget. If you prefer a diamond shape that is closer to a perfect square, look for a length-to-width ratio of between 1.0 and 1.05. If you prefer a diamond shape that is more rectangular, consider a length-to-width ratio of greater then 1.15.
